Billions to be spent on loft conversions over the next 3 years

In 25 years of building loft conversions, Loftplan have seen a huge rise in their popularity. According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) if you are considering a loft conversion, then you’re certainly not alone. Their study found that nearly a third of UK home owners are looking to carry out work on their homes within the next three years. Over a third of these proposed renovations, totalling a cost of £6 billion, are expected to be loft conversions.

Homeowners getting creative

FMB have found that just over a million homeowners are looking to build extra space to accommodate grown up children who cannot afford to move out and live in a property of their own. Many households expressed a desire to be more creative with the space in their property, with almost a third of homeowners wanting to invest in home improvements because they can’t afford to purchase a larger property to accommodate their growing family.

Almost 40% of home improvements are set to be major refurbishments, including new kitchens, new bathrooms and home extensions, while smarter works such as loft conversions and conservatories account for 38%.

Looking to the future

More and more homeowners are starting to think about the future of their homes, in particular making sure it is suitable for new arrivals to the family. The chief executive of the FMB, Brian Ferry, said in an interview: “We have seen a rising trend of multi-generational households with grown-up children opting to stay with their parents while they save money for their own homes – this study suggests more than a million homeowners across the country want to build extra space as their children are unable to fly the nest.”

How home owners choose the right service

The study also shows that one in four homeowners don’t fully understand what they need to do to find the right company to carry out your conversion.

When prioritising a service, reliable references and reviews come out on top (63%), followed by:

  • The cost of the quote (61%)
  • The professionalism of the employees (59%)
  • Whether the company is part of a trade association website or has certain accreditations (55%)
  • The depth of knowledge the company has when talking through the project is really important (54%)
